ULCCC - Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge

The challenge set down by the Energy Saving Trust to produce an ultra low carbon family car capable of being mass produced was a logical step forward in Zytek’s bid to be at the forefront of hybrid technology.

The target laid down by the EST was to produce a C class car, with fuel economy 0f >84mpg or < 3.4l/100km, with Euro IV emissions and performance of 0-100kph in <16 seconds.

Zytek’s proposal was to develop a hybrid vehicle, based on our own novel design of high efficiency, low cost dual mode hybrid transmission. A smart forfour was used as a demonstration platform for the technology. The vehicle retained its 1500cc, aluminium block, 3 cylinder turbo charged diesel engine but coupled not to the standard 6 speed gearbox but to our own hybrid transmission, combining high efficiency permanent-magnet starter-alternator, and a custom Zytek gearbox.

After successfully completing a desktop feasibility study, the design, build and calibration of two demonstration vehicles to be rigorously tested against the ULCCC target specifications was undertaken. Particular attention was paid to the fuel economy and emission targets.

These vehicles have now been completed and testing has shown measured fuel economy of 88mpg whilst complying with all emission targets. Further work on driveability continues, following which the vehicles will be available for ride and drive appraisal.
